2007 - AMRS Round 6, Winton Raceway
August 25 & 26 saw Round 6 of the
Australian Motor Racing Series return to Winton Raceway. With no
Thundersports category running at this round, the Saker GT Special
of John Biddlecombe was entered in the Intermarque Championship
against a strong field with a variety of entries including a number
of Porsches, a Maserati GT3 and a Mazda RX7.
With a 1 hour enduro for the Intermarque Championship, young gun Ben McCashney was enlisted
as the second driver in the Saker alongside Biddlecombe. McCashney's
experience shone through during practice on the Saturday, posting
one of the fastest times of the whole weekend for the category with
a 1:26.4. With some minor understeer to be tuned out and McCashney's
confidence building, the team were confident of quicker times to
come over the weekend, however a gearbox failure during Qualifying
on Saturday put an end to the team's hopes and the weekend.
Whilst it was an unfortunate end to the weekend, it was encouraging
to see Biddlecombe's Saker continually improving lap times and performance,
and an encouraging debut for Ben McCashney in the Saker. For more
information on Ben McCashney, see the press
release and the Ben
McCashney Racing website.

- AMRS Thundersports, Rd 3 Winton
April 28 & 29 saw Round 3 of the
Australian Motor Racing Series head to Winton Raceway. John Biddlecombe’s
recently rebuilt Saker was there with Luke Youlden once again behind
the wheel. This was the first outing for John’s rebuilt car
and a lack of test time meant a few teething problems caused some
minor setbacks.
A blown fuel pump fuse in qualifying saw the Saker start from the
back of the grid in race 1, but Youlden drove a superb wet race
to finish in 4th position. A gear linkage problem resulted in a
DNF for race 2, but another strong drive by Youlden saw the Saker
work its way through the field in race 3 to take a podium, coming
in 3rd.
While the car was slightly off the pace of times it had run previously
at Winton, it was an encouraging performance out of the box, with
plenty of room for improvement. Round 4 of the AMRS will be held
at Queensland Raceway on the 16th & 17th of June. See www.amrs.net.au
for more details.

2007 - Factory Racer Complete
Saker Cars Australia have spent the
early part of this year focussing on getting a factory race car
out on the track. The factory Saker SVS GT that previously existed
in road car trim has now been converted to full race spec. With
new EJ25 engine, Koni shocks, AP Racing brakes, Motec ADL dash and
a whole host of other race specific hardware, the factory car is
now undergoing final testing in preparation for the AMRS
Thundersports series.

- Construction continues
on the various Sakers throughout Australia in preparation for next
year's AMRS
Thundersports series. The Saker Cars Australia SVS GT is nearing
completion, with only minor items to be finished off before a shakedown
in mid December. The SVS Sprint of Michael Gibson continues to progress,
due for testing early next year. And the rebuild of John Biddlecombe's
SVS GT is all but complete after a major shunt at Eastern Creek
last year. Expect the Sakers to shake things up in 2007...
